Porsche’s Unseen Hypercars

These never before seen Porsche concept cars were just released to the public eye, and the German manufacturer is excited for you to take a closer look. They have been working on “Porsche Unseen”, publishing design studies from 2005 to 2019, which up until now have been locked away. But today, they have decided to show the public their spectacular visions of 15 different cars, giving an exclusive look at their design process, from first drawing to finished model, and everything in between. For this part of the series, Porsche has released 6 of their never before seen hypercard concepts, which have been hidden away in their secret archives.

Taking its inspiration from the 906 racecar that began competing in 1966, the 906 Living Legend is a 1:1 hard scale model. The red contrasting bonnet of its front end and the layout of its headlights immediately bring to mind the legendary old racing car and its unforgettable outing in the 1966 Targa Florio.

In 2010, the Porsche 918 Spyder was a milestone for Porsche as it made its debut as a truly extraordinary show car. The Porsche Vision 918 RS was created in 2019 to carry on the legacy. Porsche designers wanted to create a car that was at home both on the track and on the road. It features enhanced drive and chassis technology and an aerodynamically optimized body.

Based on the LMP1 race cars, the Porsche Vision 920 was designed as a super sports car for the road, or a possible racing car for customer motorsport. Porsche wanted to find middle ground between their design and the technology of prototype racers. This idea was translated to the 920 through a central cockpit, with deep air ducts running through a body that seems to float above the ground.

If you’re familiar with Formula E, then this concept and its shape will make a bit more sense. Formula E not only shows off the technology of the future, but also puts it to the test under high performance conditions. Porsche decided they’d make a race car for individual customers based on the Formula E platforms by introducing the Vision E concept. It is a radically lightweight, single-seater race car with 800-volt technology.

It’s a shame this 900 hp hypercar never hit the production line. This was Porsche’s best take at an LMP1 race car that was ready for the road. The car uses the same hybrid setup as the LMP1 race car, while also sharing the same carbon fiber monocoque, proportions and wheelbase. This is one Porsche concept car we’d love to get our hands on.

The Porsche 917 KH in its Porsche Salzburg red and white livery holds a special place in Porsche’s heart. It was the car that achieved Porsche’s first overall victory at the Circuit de la Sarthe in 1970. So in 2013, to mark the return of the LMP1 class, the Porsche development team created the Porsche 917 Living Legend, a modern interpretation of the special 91 KH.
